Title: NetWare for Mac v3.0 UAM - AppleShare Conflict
Bulletin Date: 4/1/90 Revision 1.0
Category: APP Sub-Category: Server
S/W Product: v3.0 NWMAC H/W Product:
Version Affected: 3.0
Operating System: NW v3.11 Rev:
System and Hardware:
Application: UAM
Symptom: If you mount another volume on a server to which you're
currently attached via the UAM, you will crash (either
right away or very shortly). If you don't crash right away,
then the Chooser window will go transparent (that is, the
white background becomes transparent) and you will be unable
to close the window (you can click in the close box and it
will highlight, but the window won't go away). The volume
does not mount. Things go downhill rapidly from there.
There's no problem with the server, so your previously
mounted volumes remain mounted and you might even be able
to access them before you crash. The best bet is immediately
to restart.
Problem: There is an incompatibility problem between the AppleShare
RDEV in the Macintosh Chooser and third-party user-
authentication methods, such as the NetWare UAM software.
Apple is aware of the problem and will fix it in the next
release of their system software. In the meantime, you must
patch the AppleShare RDEV to use the NetWare UAM on servers
with multiple volumes.
Solution or
Work-around: The AppleShare Updater is an application that will patch
the AppleShare RDEV to make it work correctly with the
NetWare UAM. If you support Macintosh clients on NetWare
v3.11 servers with multiple volumes and wish to use
encrypted passwords, you can obtain this application from
two bulletin board services. On AppleLink, the AppleShare
Updater application is located below "Third Parties," under
Novell in the NetWare for Macintosh folder. On CompuServe's
NetWire, it is located below NOVA Library 16 or 8; the
file's name on NetWire is ASUPDTR.SIT. If you are unable
to obtain this application from either of these sources,
you can contact Novell's Macintosh Technical Services
Department by calling 1-800-NETWARE.
